LIONEL MESSI – Argentine Footballer

“Circumstances are not a reason to abandon your purpose; rather, it should be a means to spur you to greatness no matter the obstacles that may surface.” It’s hard to find someone who this applies to better than Lionel Messi who overcame a growth hormone deficiency to stand tallest of them all, considered by many to be the greatest footballer to ever grace this Earth.

Today, we’ll be inspired by the story of Lionel Messi popularly known as “La Pulga”. Messi is an Argentine footballer who grew in the city of Rosario and was born to a football-loving family. He was born June 25, 1987. Right from an early age, it became obvious that he had an exceptional talent, the likes of which had never been seen. Though he was a very reserved child, his love for the game was unmatched and he was at his happiest, and most magical, when the ball is at his feet.

However, tragedy struck early. Messi’s grandmother, who discovered his talent died and Messi took the news hard. He struggled for months to move on. Soon after that, he was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency and the treatment cost $1,000 per month which his parent couldn’t afford. Although his club, Newell Old Boys made a promise to help, they later reneged, effectively abandoning him to his fate.

Lionel Messi’s greatness began when he went for the grandoli test at a tender age, despite his small stature; the coach gave him an opportunity. Little Leo didn’t disappoint in the match where he dribbled everyone on the pitch and would go on to be instrumental in his team’s first trophy.

Determined not to let Messi’s flowering talent die off before it even had a chance to grow, Messi’s grandparents living in Catalonia convinced Barcelona of his potentials. FC Barcelona offered to pay for his treatment in exchange that he signed for their youth team and that was how he overcame his ailment. His contract was signed on a napkin. This was one of the biggest Eureka Moments in history.

During his time in the FC Barcelona youth team, he was extraordinary but finally announced himself to the world in Holland 2005 FIFA Youth World where he won the best player of the tournament, highest goal scorer. His country Argentina won the trophy where scored both goals in 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the final.

The defining moment finally arrived when he scored a hat-trick in an El-Classico match against Real Madrid which happened to be one of the biggest football matches in the world. He was 19 years of age at that time. He was integrated into the first team of FC Barcelona where he formed a deadly trio with Ronaldinho and Samuel Eto’o that won the 2005/06 season treble. He won his first Ballon d’Or at the age of 21 under Pep Guardiola’s invincible FC Barcelona 2009 team that won sextuple in his first year as manager.

Aside from that, he won the Pichchi (highest goal-scorer), man player of the month award, and was crowned best player in Laliga 2008/09 season. Lionel Messi has worked so hard that he has earned himself a record six Ballon d’Or, he has been described as a player who’s obsessed with himself and demands top-level performance at all times. He has won innumerable team and individual awards, breaking and setting records along the way.

His hard work has earned him the record goal-scorer for FC Barcelona and Argentina national team. He is the second most followed footballer on social media with more than 250 million followers. He has broken many records that people thought would be impossible to surpass and today, he’s been recognized as one of the greatest players in the history of football.
